Russian dolls

We were both hollowed out by life,
and thought we could alleviate our emptiness
by dwelling inside each other,
you in me, and I in you, over and over
until all the space inside was taken up.

I could barely confront my own injuries
let alone begin to comprehend yours,
but we wrapped ourselves up in each other
like the bandages around an Egyptian mummy
that would leave a withered, dried out husk
if they were ever picked apart and unravelled.

But was this love? We couldn't say.
We could not remember a time
when we didn't feel this way. All I know is
in the eternal moment of our togetherness
I always found you beautiful and unique,
and a fitting object to place
at the centre of my universe.
