Nocturne

I tried to steer by constellated stars
towards the morning of my heart's escape,
but separated, disconnected lights
fell scattered all across the edge of night
as lonely lures to guide my course through tar.
I once saw clear and true and found afar
my horizon in you. Stars rose and set
upon the place and hour where we met,
and we were joined together in the shapes
they made. Now these are scrawled on skies of slate.
I burn the petals of our rose. I weep
and walk beneath the weight of homeless grief
not knowing where you went, what made you leave,
my only guide a firefly's caprice.
