The rowan berries have turned black

The rowan berries have turned black.
The birds have not been back
to branches they last year stripped bare
as they have done year after year.
A cursèd crop hangs there.

Its blush has succumbed to a blight
in times that lack sense and foresight,
tomorrows scorched by yesterdays
when we unleashed the flood and flame
so torrents rush and wildfires blaze
but none are found to take the blame
for decades of delays, delays, delays,

and so our appetites unchecked
mean little birds' must now neglect
the rowan berries that are black.
The birds will not be back.
